DIETARY CHANGES

• It’s important to include extra fiber in your diet and to drink plenty of water every day. This will prevent constipation. Constipation causes strain on your bowel muscles, which will make hemroids worse.
• There are foods that tend to worsen hemroid symptoms. The most common are nuts, coffee, all alcohols and spicy foods. If you notice another type of food making your hemroids worse, try abstaining for a few days and see if there is a positive effect.

BEHAVIORIAL CHANGES

• Use ice on the area for 10 minutes, then follow with a warm, moist towel for 20 minutes to provide relief.
• Don’t wipe or rub after a bowel movement! Instead, use unscented baby wipes to carefully pat down the area.

• If you use soaps or body wash that contain dyes and perfumes, switch to less chemical versions.
• Cotton undergarments will help absorb any moisture (perhaps from sweating) that can make hemroids worse.

MEDICATIONS

• Zinc is a skin protectant (it’s found in baby diaper rash cream) that can be applied to both protect the delicate anal skin and to prevent itching.
• Suppositories, such as Tucks and Preparation H are a hemroid treatment to be taken with extreme caution. They can cause damage to anal tissue with longer term use, and therefor should not be used for more then 7-10 days.
• At your drugstore you’ll also find hydrocortisone creams. These are anti-inflamitories and can help both inflammation and itching. Your doctor can prescribe a higher concentration if the over the counter strengths don’t provide relief.
• Most drugstores also offer numbing sprays that will help with the pain.

Unfortunately, these treatments don’t work for everyone. Many still suffer from the itching, burning, bleeding and pain of hemroids after trying traditional treatments. Even if the treatments above cover up symptoms, or temporarily relieve them, you’ll often find the hemroids come back. Rather then masking the symptoms, a true hemroid treatment is available. Is it possible to cure hemroids?  The answer is yes, but there are several methods to pick from.

I spoke to my doctor today and she said that she was going to follow-up on my last colonoscopy report but she felt like she would leave it alone for now. Should I press the issue and ask for another colonscopy?? Would something major pop up in the 2 1/2 years since my last test???

Bright red blood is a sign of bleeding in the lower bowel/rectum/anal areas. Dark blood is a sign of bleeding in the upper GI (Stomach/Small intestine). hemroids are internal or external depends if they develop inside the passageway of the anus (internal) or around the anus (external).

Since the skin is more sensitive, the external hemroids are more painful than internal, unless we’re talking about prolapse internal hemroids, where the internal hemroid prolapse (protrude) outside the anus and the pain is severe.

hemroids don’t just disappear by it self and bigger they are more problems they cause, so it is vital to treat them as soon as possible.

It is also important to determine what the cause of hemroids is. The most common cause is constipation. Other reasons are: significant overweight, pregnancy, overeating, acid/alkaline imbalance, vitamin B-6 deficiency, fatigue liver, genetically predisposition. Sitting or standing in one position for long periods of time can also contribute to development of hemroids.

Treatment options are: various creams, pills, medical injection, super freezing, tight rubber band placed around the base of each hemroid, surgery or laser treatment.

So my doc’s appointment got moved back to next week to look at my PROLAPSED hemroid. Till then I am helping my body in the following ways:

- Increase fiber + water intake.
- Avoid going to the john until the "urge" hits. Then I breathe in and out to help avoid straining. I use wipes.
- Adding bioflavoroids (sp?) to diet to strengthen veins.

After starting this home treatment, I notice that when I have "proper" bowel movements (no hard stools, little straining, quick and dirty), I see less blood in the toilet, and less blood when wiping. Also, my hemroid goes back in quicker and easier(shrinking?).

Note: I said "when I have…" I try to have good bowel movements everytime, but occasionally I don’t get enough water, or fiber, etc.

As you may guess, I am not a fan of invasive surgery, hence the home treatment. I research a bit and found that high fiber diets do reduce symptoms, but take a while!

Am I going in the right directions?
P.S I am a college student, so surgery would hinder me a lot, but if it’s the only way, I guess I must.

Avoid Sitting For Prolonged Periods.
Sitting on the hemroids for prolonged periods of time may agitate it and cause more bleeding and swelling. Sitting on an inflatable ring may help alleviate this problem.

Medical or Surgical Treatments
Though hemroids can usually be treated by a hot sitz bath and some minor dietary changes, if you develop a blood clot or other complications you may need other medical solutions, possibly even surgery.

Thrombosed hemroid.
This is the medical term for “hemroid with a blood clot”, and can be very painful. Luckily, the procedure to rectify the clot can be performed at nearly any emergency room or walk in clinic.

The doctor will simply cut away the clot and fill the wound with an anesthetic. A bandage is then put over top to stop any bleeding.

Prolapsed internal hemroids.
Many times a doctor will be able to reposition the internal hemroids without any type of surgery, allowing you to pass them through. However, if you are very swollen or have some other complication you will probably need surgery.

Failure to consult a doctor may result in the hemroid “dying”. It may seem to be a good thing, but it almost always results in infection. If it becomes infected you may experience extreme pain and become very ill.

In most cases hemroids relief can be taken care of at home following use of the right hemroid treatment. If you experience any amount of unexpected pain or discomfort, or you become very ill, consult your doctor immediately.

It may be what you’ve been eating lately or a change in hormones. Your body chemistry continues to change through-out your pregnancy. As long as you’re feeling alright, I don’t think you should be worried about it. Bring it up next time you go for a check up.

Just tell your mom even though it’s embarassing. She can go get you Prep H from the drugstore. If you REALLY can’t bring yourself to do that, if you have witch hazel at home put some on a cotton ball and press it onto the hemroid.

That being said, hemroids are VERY common during pregnancy.

However, with your history of polyps, and the length of time since your last colonoscopy, I think it warrants further investigation. Your doctor should be able to do an exam to see if there are external hemroids present, and may be able to do a sigmoidoscopy with minimal risk to you and your fetus to see if there are internal hemroids or polyps in the sigmoid colon. With no history of cancer, it’s probably too risky and not necessary to do a full colonoscopy at this point, and it can likely wait until the end of your pregnancy to investigate further if necessary.

*I* would contact the doctor again and press the issue a little bit, given your personal history.

ive had some slight bleading before but never so much the the toilet water changed colors.

The biopsy will confirm or rule out colon cancer. Its very unlikely that it is cancer, so after the biopsy, the next step is probably an x-ray of the entire digestive system. He should also get a very complete panel of blood tests to look for possible problems in the liver, kidneys, or with blood clotting ability. If the blood tests and x-ray don’t show anything, then its either wait and see or opt for exploratory surgery.

SOUNDS SEARIOUS and I told him everything. I said "I have been feeling generaly uneasy about this as if something could be wrong. I’m confused and would like to know if I should be worried. I noticed a change in my bowel habits and it has not gone away."

Anyway, I just had an upset stomach episode which is common with IBS. I had a lot of cramping, pain in the stomach and well you get the idea. Anyway, after wiping myself I saw some blood.

I know it is from hemroids since I’ve had them since my first child. I have seen blood before but this time it was kind of dripping some into the pot. I used a Preparation H suppository like I have in the past which always helps.

But after reading some online about this a lot of sites suggested using ICE to help shrink the bleeding hemroid or sitting in a warm bath.

I am wondering about the ice though. How would you apply that? lol

I have the some problem. Best place to apply ice is whilst on the toilet after doing your "number 1".

It seems as though red meat like steaks is pretty tough on my system and doesn’t digest properly and seems to reopen my fissure every time I do eat it. The reason why I do even though it bothers me is because I could use the Iron.. i’ve tried iron pills but they make you really constipated thus not helping the fissure heal..

My question is - why is it that it seems to go away for long periods of time.. then all of a sudden boom its there again and it takes just as long to heal which is a pain in the butt… and second.. is this normal for this to happen on and off ..especially for this long?

I’ve heard preparation H, but everyone I know who uses it has to use it all the time, which doesn’t exactly prove to me that it works. I’ve heard there are surgeries. The ones that just had them shaved off told horrible tales (They pull the anus out like folding over an eyelid, then shave the polyps and turn things back inside). In one type they somehow "microwave" the growth and it dies and drops off. And in another they use rubber bands to choke it off–which is a hoot to me because one doctor told me that I only have to worry if they "become strangulated".

….. i just had a hemroid im in my late 20s though ….and i was scared to death never had one before but i will tell you how i used to get rid of it. i got mine last tuesday and its allmost completely gone. it will prolly take about 2 weeks thats a total of about 14 days for the hemroid to be gone..but here is what you should do you will need to types of medicine the first is hydrocortisone cream ..hydrocortisone is a steroid cream which is used to shrink the hemroid also you need to buy some preparation H. you can get both of these at your local walmart and they are cheap they cost only 5 bucks each…but you need both for it to work…..first thing in the morning when you wake up apply preparation H to the hemroid / later that day you will wash off the preparation H with a wash cloth and some water and then apply the hydrocortisone cream to the hemroid…then later on you will apply some more hydrocortisone cream / then just right before you go to bed you will use a wash cloth wash off the hydro cream and apply the preparation h again……….so you will be using the preparation H and the hydro cream both twice a day……also if u can manage after you take a crap if you can i would take a shower after pooping and wash your bottom good with soap and water then apply ither the hydro cream or preperation H cream after your shower………..also make sure you dry the bottom and hemroid good after washing with a wash cloth or showering/bathing..very important……..following the advice i have gaqve you your hemroid should be gone in 14 days possibly less ….if ur hemroid has not cleared up in 14 days see a doctor…

also if ur hemroidis hurting bad sounds… like it could be infected….you need to also get you some antibotic cream….such as neosporin and apply that as well……..

But if ur hemroid is big golf ball sized then get to a doctor as soon as possible cause that means a blood clot as formed….i odnt wanna scare you but ive heard of people getn a hemroid and a blood clot forming and once the clot forms it can cause gangrene which is a roting process of the cells of the body really nasty stuff

However, I think the day I let the big one out, I got a case of hemroids. After that day, every time I go to the washroom, it hurts a lot and when I pat it clean, blood appears. The water turns a reddish-orange colour, probably due to the blood in the feces.

Is there a cure? By the way, I found out plums for me make my feces liquid-ish and a lot easier to pass. If I eat a lot of plums during the next week will that help? Does ointment like Polysporin help? How long does it usually take to heal hemroids? Thanks!

If your passing blood time to see a doctor.My doctor has me on Metamucil daily Plus a stool softener Its natural fibre and tastes ok No more pain or blood

Try eating lots of fibre rich foods, drink the extra water but go and see your doctor and let him know you are passing blood with stools. Its a little embarrasing I know, but better to get checked out anyway. They've seen it all before, its no biggie to them so don't let it worry you.

Good luck and don't worry. It is normal but its very treatable. Trust me when I say, the longer you leave it the worse it gets. The bigger you get, the more pressure down there and well, just go get checked out now.

Well, it depends on the treatment, type and size of the hemroids.
In general external hemroids cure much faster than internal. With Rue Care Oil a medium size hemroid can shrink within 5 - 7 days, and a larger one about 12 - 14 days (this is from personal and family experience). While in case of a prolapsed internal hemroid it took about 7 days for the prolapse to shrink and about 2.5 weeks for the internal hemroid to shrink.
This is, as I mentioned, by treatment with Rue Care Oil. All other treatment options including Preparation H, which hazel, sitz bath etc didn't help.

inserting the suppository causes the rectum to feel the urge, try to ignore it if you can, if you push the suppository out, it does you no good.

Do not wipe with toilet paper as it will worsen irritation. Instead use a squirt bottle and dab area with moistened medicated pads such as Tux which contains witch hazel.

Follow the 2 minute rule. If you feel the need to have a bowel movement and it does not happen within 2 minutes of being seated at the toilet, get up and try later. This prevents straining and pressure.

Wear loose fitting clothing.

Avoid foods that tend to constipate. Eat light.

You can purchase an inflatable ring that is a cushion for you to sit on. They are available at drug stores.

You may also want to try products such as preparation H or Nupercainol. They come in creams , ointments, and suppositories.

The next morning I found nothing. And when I take a poopie, I see no worms or anything unusual. Never. So Im not sure i have worms but i doubt i do.

I scratch my anus in my sleep too at night, unconsciously. Sometimes I just wake up in the middle of the night and my hands are just there already scratching.

SOUNDS SEARIOUS and I told him everything. I said "I have been feeling generaly uneasy about this as if something could be wrong. I'm confused and would like to know if I should be worried. I noticed a change in my bowel habits and it has not gone away."

So I explained the symptoms and he asked me about blood. I told him i was diagnosed with piles(hemroids) a long time ago, and every now and then a little bit on my TP but nothing I the stool. But there was alot of muccus it seemed.

He said I have IBS, but I'm not convinced of his diagnosis. I'm still a little worried. I read up on this happening to ppl my age, diagnosed with piles or IBS and having it turn up cancer?

Any advice? I feel so lost. Should I trust my GP?

Yes I think so, diarrhea and/or constipation are common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, along with bloating, gas and abdominal discomfort, but you have the right to a second opinion, if you are worried

Prep. H will cause it to shrink temporarily as well as give instant relief. If it keeps getting bigger you’ll have to go to the Dr. It should go away on it’s own if you don’t mess with it, keep applying the cream and start drinking enough water, and eating enough vegetables (celery is excellent for this) so that you don’t have to strain to go.

Some don’t hurt but do itch, others burn and itch and hurt when you poop. Tucks medicated pads give relief when the symptoms aren’t that bad but if they do get out of control you should ask your doctor for some medicine.

They helped me really well!

I've heard preparation H, but everyone I know who uses it has to use it all the time, which doesn't exactly prove to me that it works. I've heard there are surgeries. The ones that just had them shaved off told horrible tales (They pull the anus out like folding over an eyelid, then shave the polyps and turn things back inside). In one type they somehow "microwave" the growth and it dies and drops off. And in another they use rubber bands to choke it off–which is a hoot to me because one doctor told me that I only have to worry if they "become strangulated".

I never dare take laxatives because this can lead to uncontrollable bowel movements, however large dozes of vitamin C do help. Start off with one gram and if this does not do the trick increase the doze. I have also found that "Milk Thistle" drops help. Of late I have also used a stool softener "Dulco Ease". Then if all else fails try a DIY enema there is one called "Fleet" which I use when I am absolutely desperate. My doctor sugested this when I had a bowel impaction.
