Rectal Bleeding during prenancy and history of colon polyps?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

5 years ago (when I was 23) I had some disturbing rectal bleeding and cramps that prompted me to go to the doctor. They did a colonoscopy and found colon polyps which they removed (the non cancerous kind). The doctor reccomended I have a colonoscopy every 5 years to be on the safe side.
Now I’m pregnant 5 years later, and since about 2 months into my pregnancy I’ve had rectal bleeding on and off that is very similar to what I had when I found colon polyps. My nurse at the doctors office quickly brushed it off and said it’s only hemroids. I’m concerned b/c if it is polyps, couldnt the growth of the polyps or likelyness of cancer be heightened by prenancy? I’ve heard pregnancy can accelerate cancer, not sure if it’s true, should I be worried?

Pregnancy can accelerate certain cancers affected by hormones.

That being said, hemroids are VERY common during pregnancy.

However, with your history of polyps, and the length of time since your last colonoscopy, I think it warrants further investigation. Your doctor should be able to do an exam to see if there are external hemroids present, and may be able to do a sigmoidoscopy with minimal risk to you and your fetus to see if there are internal hemroids or polyps in the sigmoid colon. With no history of cancer, it’s probably too risky and not necessary to do a full colonoscopy at this point, and it can likely wait until the end of your pregnancy to investigate further if necessary.

*I* would contact the doctor again and press the issue a little bit, given your personal history.

Rectal Bleeding but its not from the Colon - Possibilities?

Ok, My husband is 28 yrs old & for the last 5 years or more he bleeds when he has a bowel movement, not always, but its usually alot. Sometimes he feels like he needs to go & only bloods comes out, nothing else. So he has been seeing some doctors. He had a few hemroids, but nothing to make that much blood & then he started on fiber to make the hemroids go away. He just had a colonoscopy & the Dr said there is a small absess, but that wouldnt cause much bleeding either. He is on antibiotics now & there was a biopsy on the abcess just in case (waiting on results). BUT WHAT ELSE CAN POSSIBLY CAUSE ALL THAT BLEEDING? Something from the stomach maybe? What else can we look into? Please help. Thank you

The colonoscopy would have detected the usual causes like hemroids, fissures, and diverticula. So that leaves possible problems in the upper digestive system or colon caner as the next most common source. Its also possible there is just an unusually large blood vessel that has grown into the intestinal lining somewhere.

The biopsy will confirm or rule out colon cancer. Its very unlikely that it is cancer, so after the biopsy, the next step is probably an x-ray of the entire digestive system. He should also get a very complete panel of blood tests to look for possible problems in the liver, kidneys, or with blood clotting ability. If the blood tests and x-ray don’t show anything, then its either wait and see or opt for exploratory surgery.

Bleeding while 25 weeks pregnant?

Friday, July 10th, 2009

I just recently had intercourse and when we finished I was bleeding. It wasn’t exactly alot but it was enough to scare me. My boyfriend was concerned that he did it "too hard" but it wasn’t different from previous times and this is the first time I bled… My sister suggested that it might be hemroids but I couldn’t tell where the blood was coming from and it only bled for about 5 minutes and hasn’t bled since. Also I thought hemroids were painful and I’m not feeling any pain… any suggestions on what this might be?

My Dr. told me that women who are pregnant are extremely sensitive "down there" and it is very common to bleed after sex, or even after a Dr’s exam. If the bleeding was not enough to fill a pad in about an hour or two, was not associated with bad backpain or cramping, and the bleeding has stopped, I think you are just fine.

But always call your Dr. if you need reassurance, that is what they are there for.

Good luck.

and it itches and they frickin hurt….how do you get rid of them without going to the doctor??

Take baths to soak hemroids couple of times at least a day.

Do not wipe with toilet paper as it will worsen irritation. Instead use a squirt bottle and dab area with moistened medicated pads such as Tux which contains witch hazel.

Follow the 2 minute rule. If you feel the need to have a bowel movement and it does not happen within 2 minutes of being seated at the toilet, get up and try later. This prevents straining and pressure.

Wear loose fitting clothing.

Avoid foods that tend to constipate. Eat light.

You can purchase an inflatable ring that is a cushion for you to sit on. They are available at drug stores.

You may also want to try products such as preparation H or Nupercainol. They come in creams , ointments, and suppositories.

can you have hemroids without them being painful and no bleeding at all, or is it something else?

I’m not sure if what I have is hemroids or if they are something else. I got them while I was pregnant with my son 2 1/2 yrs ago and it started off like really small loose skin around my anus, they haven’t been painfull at all, and there has been no bleeding. Now over 2 1/2 yr period they have gotten slightly bigger. It is just like extra loose lumpy skin. I can touch, squeeze, etc and there is absolutely no pain at all. So are these hemroids or something else? I started getting it while I was pregnant, and I still have it 2 1/2 yrs later and I am now pregnant again, I want to ask my ob doctor about it, but it is kind of embarassing to bring it up.

These are not haemorrhoids. These are nothing but the skin tag at the anal verge. These are due to chronic anal fissure. Anal fissure is nothing but a small break in the skin of the anus which is as a result of chronic constipation and then straining at stools. They will heal by themselves. But sometimes leave behind a small skin tag. This skin tag is called as a sentinel pile. Here the word pile is a misnomer. Because it is only a skin tag and unlike the usual pile does not bleed. It gives you the wrong connotation because of this misnomer (that it may bleed). If it is irritating or itching or getting swollen or giving you trouble otherwise, you have it excised as an office procedure at your surgeons clinic. Your complaint does not fall under the speciality of Obstetrics but under general surgery. Have it checked.

Pregnant, with bleeding hemroids?

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I know this may be gross but I need help. I am 8 months pregnant and noticed I had hemroids on Friday. At first they hurt like hell but the pain got better within about 3 days. Well I have been bleeding since Sunday night. I used Tucks, and PH. Also I called the doctor and they subscribed some foam type of medication that numbs the area. My question is, how long might the bleeding last and how do I get them to stop bleeding? I have a dr app on fri so I dont think I should make an appointment for today. Please Help

It will last as long as you have to keep straining to go!! Talk to your doc again and see if they will recommend a stool softener that is what I did and it eventually healed..

What can you do for bleeding hemroids?

Sit in a tub of warm Epsom Salts water for starters to help shrink them. You need to change your eating habits. Sounds like you are eating mostly junk food & starchy foods & no green vegetables. You need to get more fiber into your system. Eat plenty of green, leafy vegetables. Drink plenty of water to help keep the traffic flowing. Eat lots of boiled or steamed vegetables. Snack on raw celery sticks, carrot sticks, banana’s & grapes. Slack off the potatoes, rice, pasta, junk food, fast food restaurant food, sweet soda’s. When you have a BM, don’t rush it - let it move naturally - DO NOT STRAIN - that makes the hemrhoids pop out. You can soothe the area with Vaseline and/or Preparation H.

hemroid surgery?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Hi there. I need very urgent advice here. I've been suffering terrible hemroids almost last 3 months which is bleeding , itching and very sore. I have tried almost every thing and my doctor told me I should try surgery. But I dont think its real good idea because mine is not really big which I saw on internet, but still very uncomfortable. I'm going to my doctor in 2 days time which I have to let her know I'm having surgery or not. Please anyone here had surgery , is it really painful? help me

I haven't, but I wish I could. Go for it, get them off of you. They are only going to get worse and worse, and then you will wish you had done it. Whatever pain the surgery causes is better than a lifetime of ass pain.
